A hair blower is used to dry our wet hair after shower. We also notice that the air from the hair blower is so hot. Well, that heat activates the evaporationĀ  process of water from our hair. Did you ever wonder how heat affects evaporation rates? In this experiment, we are going to explore the heat and its evaporation rates. Heat and its effect on evaporation rates will be studied when water is placed under different wattage bulbs.

### PROBLEM

What are the different evaporation rates of heating?

HYPOTHESIS

It is expected that the heat with greatest wattage will have fastest rate of water evaporation. The more kinetic energy molecules have, the faster they move allowing them to break free of the bonds that hold them together. In short, the higher the temperature, the more rapid is the evaporation.

### MATERIALS

• a twenty-five watt bulb
• a forty-watt bulb
• a sixty-watt bulb
• a seventy-five watt bulb.
• 4 rubber light sockets
• 4 boxes (to hung the bulbs)
• 4 measuring glasses of eight oz. water.

### PROCEDURE

1. Prepare all the materials needed.
2. Put the boxes together.
3. Measure the center of the top of the box.
4. Poke the light socket through the center, making sure that the prong is exactly two and one-half inches above the box.
5. Tape the light to the box in that spot.
6. Measure the center of the bottom of the box.
7. Place an 8-oz measuring glass directly on the center on the bottom of the box.
8. Tape the glass down to make sure it would be stable
9. Place a twenty-five watt bulb in the socket and label the box.
10. Put the other three boxes together in the same way making sure that the socket was at the same height and place and the same for the measuring glass.
11. Fill each glass with eight ounces of water making sure each has the exact same measurement.
12. Keep the light on for thirty hours.
13. Pour the water back into each measuring glass and record the number of ounces that remained.
14. Log all results.

RESULTS / ANALYSIS OF DATA

Based on the tabulated results, compare the measurements of water left. It turned out that the bulb with higher wattage has the fastest evaporation rate. The seventy-five watt bulb caused the greatest amount of evaporation. Present the data which is volume of water left like for example in every three hours until finished. Then the evaporation percentage will be computed.

CONCLUSION

The hypothesis is correct. As assumed, it is obvious that the seventy-five watt bulb caused the most evaporation. This is because, the more heat a substance has, the more kinetic energy is involved. It is such energy that causes theĀ  evaporation process.
